ROAD 13 VINEYARDS – BC WINERIES & VINEYARDS

THE MOTTO OF ROAD 13 “IT’S ALL ABOUT THE DIRT”

ABOUT ROAD 13
The site was originally operated by a partnership between three field engineers who were kicked out of Russia by the communists after the revolution. After irrigation canal water became available inthe early 1920s, they planted tree fruits and ground crops.

The land was next sold to Tim Robin, one of the largest growers in the area, who continued to farm it as an apple and peach orchard.

The property was sold in a derelict state to Hungarian Arpad Pallay in 1961. Arpad (deceased in 2004) planted apples, cherries and ground crops. He was the first farmer in the lower valley to circumvent the growers’ co-op and took his fruit direct to Vancouver. As a juicy side, his daughter Kate married the son of the fruit inspector who has always trying to catch Arpad selling his fruit outside the co-op!

Peter and Helga Serwo purchased the winery site in 1985. Coming to the Okanagan Valley in the late 1960s from Germany, where they worked as building contractors and grape growers. They continued these callings in Canada and were responsible for a good chunk of the early Golden Mile plantings including the original Tinhorn Creek site. Pam and Mick Luckhurst purchased the land in 2003, when Peter and Helga wanted to slow down after 50 years of viticulture.

THIEVERY CORPORATION – VANCOUVER – 2011

THIEVERY CORPORATION AT MALKIN BOWL – STANLEY PARK

Tuesday, September 13th – 5:30pm at Malkin Bowl, Thievery Corporation will perform with guests Los Amigos Invisibles. Culture of Fear – a cinematic-sounding inquiry into space rock that straddles the sweet spot between funk and soul, with a bit of dub and reggae thrown in for good measure. The title track, featuring vocals/lyrics by rapper Mr. Lif, comments on the fact that, nearly 10 years after 9/11, “everyone is afraid of everything,” Hilton says. “People are living like wimps. The terror level is always at orange. Now we’ve got body scanners in airports. Somehow the whole country’s been spun into this pointless web of fear.” Adds Garza: “People have learned to be subservient to the system, automatically taking their shoes off at airports. Our message with this album is that there really is nothing to fear. The things we’re being told to fear aren’t what we should fear. The intrusion into your day-to-day rights and privacy are a whole lot scarier.”

VANCOUVER ART GALLERY – THE SURREALIST REVOLUTION IN ART

THE COLOUR OF MY DREAMS

The most comprehensive exhibition of Surrealist art ever to be shown in this country will open at the Vancouver Art Gallery on May 28, 2011. The Colour of My Dreams: The Surrealist Revolution in Art features 350 works by leading Surrealist artists, including André Breton, Salvador Dalí, Max Ernst, René Magritte, Joan Miró, Alberto Giacometti, Leonora Carrington, Brassaï, André Masson, Man Ray, Edith Rimmington, Wifredo Lam and many others.

Guest curated by Dawn Ades, internationally renowned expert on Surrealist art, The Colour of My Dreams will be shown exclusively at the Vancouver Art Gallery. Ades has selected works of art that underscore the Surrealists’ radical sense of experimentation and the expansive range of mediums in which they worked, including painting, sculpture, collage, photography and film. The exhibition provides a stunning overview of one of most important movements of the 20th century and features a number of signature works by more than 80 artists including Dali’s Lobster Telephone, Ernst’s The Forest, Miró’s Photo: This is the Colour of My Dreams, Giacometti’s Spoon Woman, Carrington’s The House Opposite and Man Ray’s Emak-Bakia, among many others. It will also reveal, for the first time, the Surrealists’ passionate interest in indigenous art of the Pacific Northwest and the little-known influence of early Hollywood cinema on the development of Surrealist film.

VANCOUVER’S MOUNTAIN VIEWS AND EXTREME TALL BUILDINGS

PUBLIC FORUM JAN 11th AT VPL: THREATS TO VANCOUVER FROM EXTREME TALL BUILDING POLICIES IN DOWNTOWN, WEST END, CHINATOWN, DOWNTOWN EASTSIDE

extremely tall towers vancouver

City council is on the verge of making what may be among Vancouver’s most important decisions in a generation on January 20th. On that day, Council is prepared to adopt two key policies to eliminate protected views and permit extreme building heights of 80 storey or taller on the downtown peninsula, and significantly higher buildings in Chinatown and the Downtown East Side.

CityHallWatch plans a public forum on January 11th to help citizens identify and articulate key concerns that staff and Council appear to have missed and should address before any vote on the policies. Issues that have not yet been adequately addressed include not only lost or eroded views, significant view changes from many locations in the City, and major changes to the skyline, but also implications for Vancouver’s livability, sustainability, affordability and gentrification, ecological footprints (buildings and the city), global warming, city infrastructure, traffic and transportation, city finances and taxes, schools, public amenities, seismic safety, fire safety, disaster response, and the very character of Vancouver. Expert presentations, Q&A and small group discussions on (1) risks to Vancouver’s mountain views from extremely tall building policies set for City Council approval on January 20, and (2) critical impacts on livability, solar access, environment, sustainability, city finances, city infrastructure and more. This is a public forum with expert input. Media are welcome.
