<p style="text-align: left;"><a title="Vancouver International Children's Festival 2013" href="http://vancouver4life.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/ICF.png" target="_blank"><img class="aligncenter  wp-image-14195" title="Vancouver International Children's Festival 2013" alt="ICF" src="http://vancouver4life.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/ICF.png" width="596" height="221" /></a>The Vancouver International Children’s Festival (VICF), presented by Coast Capital Savings, is setting the stage for its 36th annual event, taking place May 27th to June 2nd on Granville Island. Professional performing artists from Norway, Africa, Germany and Canada will be performing 12 shows in six Granville Island venues, including four indoor and two outdoor Festival environments. In addition, the Festival hosts over 15 hands-on arts activities such as shadow puppetry, an outdoor weaving sculpture, bicycle spin-art, origami, a sock puppet workshop, circus skills, the Twist &amp; Toddle play area and much, much more. The Festival expects 30,000 children and adults in attendance. Highlights of this year’s Festival include the North American premiere of Sparrow &#8211; a show from Norway that is created specifically for babies and tots (7 to 24 months old); the Canadian debut of Cirque Zuma Zuma &#8211; the African acrobats who were thrust into stardom performing on America’s Got Talent; the multi-media sensation Queen of Colours, which blends shadow puppetry, live music, painting and video projection into a theatrical performance; and four special evening performances including two Pyjama Nights.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span id="more-14190"></span>Tickets for featured performances are $25 per adult, $15 per child including tax and service charges, with exceptions for Sparrow ($25 adult, $5 child) and the Variety Show ($25 adult, $22 child). Show tickets include access to all hands-on arts activities so come for a show but stay for the whole day! <p><strong>FESTVIAL OVERVIEW</strong><br />
A world-renowned festival of performing arts for young audiences, the Vancouver International Children&#8217;s Festival has been educating, entertaining and inspiring young audiences since 1978. The Vancouver International Children’s Festival moved to Granville Island in 2011. Why Granville Island? The decision to move the Festival to Granville Island was made with great deliberation. Everyone loves the Vanier Park, but the best artistic work in the world today requires technical support that could not be provided in tents. At Granville Island there is access to theatrically equipped venues, and plenty of outdoor spaces. Granville Island is a vibrant, creative hub and home to numerous cultural festivals and events. It offers the environment and opportunities to take the Festival into the 21st century. Despite the many challenges still facing the festival, it was a move in the right direction. The Vancouver International Children&#8217;s Festival Society is a non-profit charity.</p>

<p><strong>ARTSTARTS GALLERY</strong><br />
The ArtStarts Gallery is the first in Canada devoted exclusively to young people&#8217;s art. Since the gallery opened in 2006, their exhibitions have celebrated the exciting artwork that emerges when students, educators and professional artists work together to deepen learning, creativity and community connections. The exhibitions often showcase the inspiring work resulting from ArtStarts&#8217; <a title="ArtStarts Gallery Artists in Classroom" href="http://artstarts.com/artists-in-the-classroom" target="_blank">Artists in the Classroom</a> program, which supports opportunities for schools to work directly with professional artists to learn in and through the arts. ArtStarts on Saturdays is a free workshop series for families at the downtown gallery that features 45-minute, multi-disciplinary, culturally diverse workshops with some of the best children&#8217;s artists.</p>

<p>The 1.25 acre site will see the development of 72,000 sf of retail space that is sorely needed it the Mount Pleasant community (possibly a grocer and other boutique retailers and local businesses) in addition to condos for sale with a variety of price points, sizes and floor plans for various home buyers. The 4 building heights are five storeys, five storeys, nine storeys and 19 storeys with an FSR of 5.55. Up to 6,600 sf of additional community amenities that include public spaces, pedestrian improvements up to Watson Street and an enhanced 10th Avenue bike route as well as up to half a million dollars in public art installations. The Kingsway and Broadway proposal is also for 320 car underground parking</p>
<p><span id="more-13556"></span>Rize is proud to be the owner of this property as well as your neighbour and plan to be a long-term member of the Mount Pleasant community. Rize started working with the City and Community on this rezoning proposal in the spring of 2008 and in October of 2011, a rezoning application was submitted to the City of Vancouver proposing a 5, 5, 9 and 19 storey, mixed-use, transit oriented building.</p>
<p>The Mount Pleasant Community Plan was adopted November of 2010, the result of a three year, intensive community wide process. As part of this community plan, the 1.25 acre site located at East Broadway, Kingsway, East 10th and Watson Street was designated as one of three within Mount Pleasant that should be considered as high-density, high-rise developments &#8211; with the provision of appropriate community benefits. These sites were seen as important for achieving the goals set out in the Community Plan, including; more housing, better site development and provision of important community benefits.</p>
<p>As of a revised submission (2012-01-17) with modifications resulting from City and Community input, the project includes:</p>
<p>•  A two storey commercial space containing 72,000 square feet of retail. The retail units are of varied size including six small scale spaces along Broadway to reflect the scale of retail seen throughout Mount Pleasant. The largest possible single retail space is 34,000sf (Buy Low Groceries is approx.. 28,000sf and IGA is approx. 30,000sf) and may be a single retailer or divided into smaller spaces.<br />
•  241 homes in a variety of sizes and housing types (reflecting a desired range of housing variability and pricing)<br />
•  building heights of 5, 5, 9 and 19 storeys<br />
•  floor space ratio (FSR) of 5.55<br />
•  Improved public realm including 6,600 square feet of new public space, pedestrian improvements to Watson Street, and enhancements to the 10th Avenue bicycle route.<br />
•  $538,000 public art contribution<br />
•  underground parking for 320 vehicles (reduced by 10% for transit oriented location as permitted by COV)<br />
•  increased sidewalk widths on portions of the Kingsway and 10th Avenue frontages</p>
<p>NOTE: as of 01/17/2012 the STIR rental and the 9,200sf artist production space have been deleted at the City’s request and will be replaced with a cash contribution toward “off-site cultural or civic facilities, or other approved public benefit” as determined by the City of Vancouver with community input.</p>
