“A SINCERE ARTIST IS NOT ONE WHO MAKES A FAITHFUL ATTEMPT TO PUT ON TO CANVAS WHAT IS IN FRONT OF HIM, BUT ONE WHO TRIES TO CREATE SOMETHING WHICH IS , IN ITSELF, A LIVING THING.” – SIR WILLIAM DOBELL
CREATE LIVING WORKS OF ART
Living in urban environments, we are surrounded by concrete, traffic, noise and pollution. This is not healthy. It has a profound impact on our physical and mental wellness. Greenery softens this hard environment, acting as a tonic to ease stress and fatigue. Green walls provide a substantial and spiritual connection to nature which is missing in the modern concrete jungle.
They design and install living walls also known as green walls or vertical gardens. Their unique soil-free system makes it possible to transform any vertical surface into a lush and strikingly beautiful garden, either inside or out.
Their goal is to create living works of art that purify the air you breathe, make life more sustainable and add some green to the grey of our cities.
Green over Grey™ is a leading North American based design firm. Their head office is in Vancouver, BC with a branch in Toronto, ON. They undertake work in Montreal and Calgary as well as across Canada and the US.
WHAT ARE LIVING WALLS
Living walls or green walls are self sufficient vertical gardens that are attached to the exterior or interior of a building. They differ from green façades (e.g. ivy walls) in that the plants root in a structural support which is fastened to the wall itself. The plants receive water and nutrients from within the vertical support instead of from the ground.
The Green over Grey™ living wall system is different than others on the market today. It closely mimics nature and allows plants to grow to their full potential, without limitations. It is also by far the lightest.
Diversity is the key and by utilizing hundreds of different types of plants we create striking patterns and unique designs. We achieve this by utilizing the multitude of colours, textures and sizes that nature provides. Our system accommodates flowering perennials, beautiful foliage plants, ground covers and even allows for bushes, shrubs, and small trees!
Living walls are also referred to as green walls, vertical gardens or in French, mur végétal. The French botanist and artist Patrick Blanc was a pioneer by creating the first vertical garden over 30 years ago.
Our system consists of a frame, waterproof panels, an automatic irrigation system, special materials, lights when needed and of course plants. The frame is built in front of a pre existing wall and attached at various points; there is no damage done to the building. Waterproof panels are mounted to the frame; these are rigid and provide structural support. There is a layer of air between the building and the panels which enables the building to ‘breath’. This adds beneficial insulating properties and acts like rain-screening to protect the building envelop.
Our green walls are low maintenance thanks to an automatic irrigation system. They are water efficient, especially when compared to the irrigation that is used for gardens and urban parks. Being hydroponic (i.e. soil-less) makes them very clean and eliminates the possibility of soil borne pathogens. A lightweight porous material takes the place of soil and therefore the walls are very light, weighing less than 4 lb/ft2 (20 kg/m2). It is the lightest green wall system on the market today!
A material is used which evenly distributes moisture and nutrients to the plants. This also doubles as a structural support for the roots and allows them to grow everywhere, resulting in no space limitations. The system reproduces thin layers of moss or substrate growing on exposed vertical areas such as rocks, cliff faces, tree trunks or river banks.
This method is used because it provides a beautiful diverse living wall and allows for a greater creativity in design. Hundreds upon hundreds of plant species have been tested and were found to thrive on our green walls meaning that we have almost endless possibilities in design! As a result, we can create a vertical garden that is uniquely customized to your space.
Our focus is on the creation of spectacular and eye-catching green walls either inside or out.
Vancouver is surrounded by the ocean, mountains and forests. You don’t have to go far to discover natural green walls growing on cliffs next to the sea, near waterfalls or on old-growth rainforest trees. This amazing region has inspired us to bring nature into the cities.
When deciding on a name there were certain things that we hoped people would envision when they heard it. We wanted to portray the ideas of nature and city.
When one walks around urban centers today, although there may be parks and tree lined streets, there are many buildings that are simply concrete structures which lack colour, diversity and pizzazz. If colours are used they are usually single-toned, boring and monotonous.
Colours can be interpreted differently but we felt that the colour grey (or the color gray in American spelling) gives the feeling of cold and boring things, such as “a grey winter day”. So for us grey represented dull and repetitive things.
Green, on the other hand, gives the feeling of nature, fresh air, healthy living and things that are good for the earth.
Green plants provide oxygen and filter the air we breathe as well as being nice to look at. In today’s modern society people like how plants look but many don’t want to have to look after them and end up getting plastic or silk plants. Although they may be nice to look at, they don’t serve the same function that living plants do. At Green over Grey™ we look after the plants and you reap the benefits!
The word ‘over’ was chosen for a number of reasons. The first reason being that we personally choose health and beauty ‘over’ dull and monotonous. Second, we come and give your living or working space a green make-‘over’. And finally we are physically covering ‘over’ an unexciting wall.
