ABOUT IDSWEST
The Interior Design Show West (IDSwest) is Western Canada’s annual premiere residential design show featuring over 200 exhibitors showcasing quality products and services to an audience of industry professionals, architects, designers, and consumers. The event attracts 30,000 attendees over three and a half days, and roughly 22,000 of these are avid design enthusiasts looking to source and purchase some of the latest trends and innovations in contemporary home design.
NEW AT IDSWEST 2011
This year IDSwest will be forecasting the future with the launch of several new products and designs on the show floor. Here are just a few new products being unveiled at IDSwest 2011:
• Mth BloomX tables, worldwide launch: These sleek, cutting-edge tables feature salvaged birch branches in grey resin and a simplistic base made of bleached beech wood.
• TRASHBonBon’s Concrete Matter’s Collection tables, western Canadian launch: The concept – call on local graffiti artists to transpose the city’s industrial soul onto furniture and accessories. The result? Successfully bringing urban art into live and work spaces.
• Moooi Gothic Chair + Moooi Firmship Carpet, western Canadian launch: Studio Job designed this chair for the recently renovated Groninger Museum in the Netherlands, while the carpet finds its origin in nautical iconography.
• Collaboration’s PL Series, western Canadian launch: A striking addition to the world of everyday planters. With exceptionally fluid lines, these planters offer an irregular silhouette and a strongly relieved surface created by Louvre schooled sculptor Marie Khouri.
• molo softshelter, international launch: A unique system for creating personal space within a larger shelter area in order to provide individuals and families with a sense of privacy and encourage community-building in the days following a disaster.
FLOFORM OPENING NIGHT
Thursday, September 29th @ 6:00pm
The IDSwest Opening Night Party on September 29th, 2011, will combine cutting edge design, live music and custom crafted cocktails in a dynamic setting. Gathering 4000 guests, the design party of the year will center around the show’s 2011 signature “Fluoro” cocktail pour at the tom dixon pop-up bar, the hottest spot to meet up on the IDSwest floor. Straight from the UK and presented by Inform Interiors, the Tom Dixon bar will have a dockside atmosphere decked out with Jack Lights, Slab tables and Fluoro chairs. Etch lighting will provide ambience overhead and Etch candleholders will sit along the bar counter. Guests can choose to dance around the Para Stage or rub shoulders with the west coast’s design elite.
FEATURES
A 220 sq ft home, a pop up bar, emerging design firms and inventive pieces from future design masters round out this year’s special features.
L41
Top of the line appliances, a gourmet kitchen, a full projection screen to watch your favourite movies, and an outdoor patio. Sounds like a pricey apartment. In actuality, this and more comes standard with the ultra-compact L41, a 220 sqft home designed by architect Michael Katz and designer Janet Corne.
A play on the words, “All for one, one for all, a home for all”, the L41 will be on public view and one of the feature displays at IDSwest. A marvel of small space living, this delightful home is factory built and delivered move-in ready, designed to make it possible for the millions of people who otherwise cannot afford to buy a house to become homeowners.
The L41 is conceived for a generation that understands small is beautiful, and believes in the importance of the preservation of our precious resources.
ENLIGHTENED DESIGN Presented by Audi
Setting the stage for IDSwest 2011, Enlightened Design will welcome visitors immediately as they arrive. Showcasing lighting designs from 2011, Enlightened Design will demonstrate new diversity and creativity that designers are bringing to light design and technologies.
Enlightened Design is being designed and curated by Studio Pombo, a past IDSwest Working Wood participant.
DESIGN FOR SAIL
What once was iconic roofing comes to life as a new everyday object. In partnership with Architecture For Humanity Vancouver, Canada Place, and in association with Artsy-Dartsy, IDSwest is proud to present Re-Fab: Design For Sail – the creative reuse of the legacy sails fabric from Canada Place. Re-Fab challenges local designers to bring new considerations to this teflon-coated, waterproof, fire-rated, fabric material.
Participants include:
• Contexture Design
• Designers at Large
FUTURE MASTERS
After the overwhelming success of Future Masters in 2010 IDSwest, in partnership with Artsy-Dartsy, will be highlighting young design talent and local design institutions for a second year. Design students have been provided with the opportunity to submit past and current projects and are evaluated on concept, originality, design resolution, craftsmanship and completeness. Don’t miss the sound resonating furniture by Benjamin McLaughlin, the Geodesic Wares of Sarah Peloquin Ladany and the healing plant powers of plant kit nuum from Lavinia Chu.
STUDIO NORTH
One of the most exciting areas on the IDSwest show floor is Studio North: an IDSwest participation option for emerging design firms. This year look for the distinct handmade tile of Edgewater Studio and the sculptural painting work of Dina Gonzales Mascaro.
• Fieldwork
• Vancouver Design Nerds
• Nathan Martell
• Buddhist Junk
