A fusion of clean mid-century modern design, superb craftsmanship, and a less is more aesthetic, edited with their open West Coast sensibilities. A celebration of the unique character and personality of each and every piece of solid wood, whether hardwood or soft, and other warm natural organic materials.

WHO THEY ARE
The Kozai collection brings together the best of West Coast and Japanese studio furniture and lighting. It reflects a fusion of mid-century design, a less-is-more aesthetic, open West Coast sensibilities, and superb Japanese and West Coast craftsmanship.

Most importantly, their pieces celebrate the unique character and personality of each and very piece of solid hard and soft wood.

Kozai Modern was established in 2003 by Ron Cromie, a long-time resident of Japan and China who has always had a fascination with furniture and furniture making.

Ron is partnered by Hideki Shimizu. Born in Tokyo, Hideki studied fine art in the U.S. and London, and has a passion for design and an eye for detail.

In recent years they have selelcted from the best of the burgeoning West Coast studio furniture scene in Vancouver, including artisans Peter Pierobon, Brent Comber, Seiji Kuwabara, Arnt Arntzen, Steven Pollock, Ian Goodfrey, Jeff Trigg and Meagan Schafer.

In Japan they are supported by their principal workshops, Takumi Kohgei, located on the northern island of Hokkaido. Other workshops, for both furniture and lighting, are spread throughout the country, often in smaller towns and villages.

Their designers, both in Vancouver and Japan, design from thorough understanding of material and craft. Designs are clean and simple, and very focused on ergonomics and end use.

THE KOZI NAME
The Kozai (kou-zai) name in Japanese literally means hard material and is a technical term used by Japanese woodworkers to designate hardwoods, particularly solid hardwoods.
