STRATHCONA VILLAGE

STRATHCONA-VILLAGE

Overlooking Burrard Inlet, the North Shore Mountains, Port Metro Vancouver, and downtown, Wall Centre 900 Hastings offers sweeping, breathtaking views. Just minutes from the city’s core, historic Strathcona is home to fabulous restaurants and coffee shops, artists’ studios and cultural events, craft breweries and corner grocery stores, community gardens and shopping. All in a neighbourhood of character and story.

This LEED-Silver building was conceived by gBL Architects, an award-winning firm known for its sustainable practices and a proud member of the Canada Green Building Council. Seeking an aesthetic to fit in with Strathcona’s heritage, gBL looked to Port Metro Vancouver as inspiration. The bold colours and forms of the harbour’s cranes and container docks are evident in the project’s design, which gives a nod to stacked shipping containers. Bands of colour and large windows capture the essence and vitality of life in Strathcona.

The North Shore mountains form a ruggedly beautiful backdrop for Wall Centre 900 Hastings’ expansive vistas of Vancouver in all its splendour. Gorgeous sunsets, picturesque Stanley Park, the lights and towers of downtown Vancouver, as well as cruise ships, freighters, and float planes: these views are all here to take in and savour.

Inside 900 Hastings, you’ll find striking details and finishes, all selected with an eye to sustainability and style. Interiors selected by BYU Design, the sleek, modern interiors emphasize space, beauty, function, comfort, and originality, making the homes as unique as the neighbourhood itself.

900 Hastings has several outdoor spaces for residents to use and enjoy, whether it’s sipping wine around a stunning patio gas-fire bowl, barbecuing and dining al fresco with friends, or having a morning latte while enjoying the scenery. Besides some private patios, the amenity spaces includes opportunities for urban agriculture, giving green thumbs the chance to garden.

Open kitchens with open-style shelving, airy living spaces, top of the line stainless-steel appliances, gas cooktops and ovens, textured laminate-wood flooring, concrete inspired flooring tiles, convenient USB sockets combo electrical outlets, and the NEST Learning Thermostat—these are just some of the features that make living at 900 Hastings so easy and luxurious.

Careful consideration for the environment has gone into every aspect of 900 Hastings, from water-efficient landscaping to energy-efficient design and building envelope. Low-emitting paints, carpet, and other materials have been used, resulting in improved indoor air quality. There’s a charging station for electrical vehicles. 900 Hastings also features a green roof, which provides ecological benefits, such as habitat for birds, and minimizes the project’s carbon footprint by reducing storm-water runoff.

Two distinct design schemes distinguish 900 Hastings’ homes. One uses comforting light-wood tones, shaker doors, and neutral finishing, while the other features sleek, glossy whites with charcoal accents.  Homes come with the option to upgrade to a modern concrete inspired tiling that doesn’t involve the maintenance required for that material.

Strathcona’s got it all. With its close proximity to downtown, it couldn’t be more conveniently located. Chinatown, Gastown, and Commercial Drive are excellent neighbours. Several exciting restaurants are nearby: Bao Bei Chinese Brasserie, Campagnolo Roma, the Red Wagon, and East of Main to name just a few. Craft-beer lovers love the fact that several new breweries have popped up in the area, known affectionately to some as “Vancouver’s Brewery District”: the Powell Street Craft Brewery, the Coal Harbour Brewery (on Triumph Street), Storm Brewing, and Parallel 49 Brewing. Strathcona Community Gardens are an urban oasis. Vancouver artists who call the neighbourhood home open their studio doors to the public on the first Saturday of every month. And for nearly four decades, the Powell Street Festival has celebrated Japanese Canadian arts and culture, drawing thousands of people each year. It’s an exciting time to be in a flourishing community.

Living in Strathcona, Vancouver is at your doorstep. Direct bus routes are right out front. The Union Street bike path is blocks away. (Even if you’re not a cyclist, be sure to visit the family-run Benny’s Market, which has been serving outstanding sandwiches in the same Union Street spot since 1917.) The seaplane terminal is nearby; so are the Seabus, the SkyTrain, the Canada line, and Highway 1. Whether it’s shopping, dining, cycling, walking, doing business, or exploring Vancouver’s thriving cultural scene, you’re well-positioned living here.

The outdoors are easily reached from 900 Hastings. Nearby Strathcona and Andy Livingstone Parks offer tennis and basketball courts and soccer fields, among other amenities. You can walk or cycle to Trout Lake, which has an off-leash area for dogs. Stroll through Gastown to reach the Stanley Park seawall or head toward Science World to access the False Creek seawall. Crab Park at Portside, east of Canada Place, meanwhile, is one of Vancouver’s hidden waterfront gems.

What makes a community a home are the people who live and work within it. Some who call Strathcona home have deep family roots in the area; others are choosing the neighbourhood because of its character and convenience. This is real Vancouver, and these are a few folks who are proudly Strathcona.

The brand new Strathcona branch of the Vancouver Public library is moving in just two blocks away, at 730 East Hastings Street. The proposed 12,000-square-foot library will occupy two floors of a new, six-storey, $21-million building that will also include a YWCA community programming centre as well as housing.
