The design of 1550 Alberni Westbank is shaped by its environment. The 43-storey tower is carved by two emphatic scoops that form deep balconies furnished in wood. In both instances, the carvings create semi-enclosures that strengthen their relations to the street and to the views – to its urban and geographic context while optimizing neighbouring views past the project.

Because of the way the otherwise orthogonal tower is carved, its silhouette constantly changes, creating illusionary profiles of arching cantilevers. The reality is far more structured as the carved deductions are diagonally symmetrical, the lower portion helping to counterbalance the hanging volume above.

The tower meets the ground with two intersecting domes that embrace Alberni and Cardero. Under the arching structures, an extensive moss garden defines the entrance and flows to the swimming pool above. In keeping with Japanese spatial traditions, the emphasis is on the atmosphere rather than the object: without drawing attention to a particular point laden with meaning, the void elicits a serene visceral experience that could be shared by all.

1550 Alberni Westbank will include intricate design details such as woodwork in the plinth, interior design of residential tower, and a Japanese Restaurant experience designed by Kengo Kuma Architects and Associates.

Interwoven layers of overlapping textures define the experience of Alberni. From the scale of the city to that of the detail, the architecture reveals a series of stories centered on craftsmanship and materiality.

As one moves through the building, new sceneries unfold with increasing definition. Themes of nature, lightness, and transparency carry through with distinct spatial characteristics, always yielding new details upon closer inspection.

The unique context of a metropolis surrounded by water and mountains
is the source of inspiration for the tower. Architecturally, the volume is recessed from its neighbors with gentle curves to create an urban landscape, symbolically forming the entryway to the building as well as to downtown Vancouver.

The urban strategy of carving and framing seeks to add through subtracting. The attached ideas hope to evoke the rich layers of the design.

You could say that my aim is ‘to recover the place’.
The place is a result of nature and time; this is the most important aspect.
I think my architecture is some kind of frame of nature.
With it, we can experience nature more deeply and more intimately.
Transparency is a characteristic of Japanese architecture;
I try to use light and natural materials to get a new kind of transparency.

The material palette of the tower gravitates from hard to soft as one moves from the exterior to the interior. The applications of the materials, however, belie their properties: metal panels are shingled like tapered wood, the lobby drapery is made of a delicate metal mesh, screens and handrails appear as floating sheets of Washi paper. In this way, the “hardness” or “softness” of materials do not necessarily correlate with our expectations of their performance.

Excellence in architecture is the result of a modest attitude toward the times, and such an attitude enables a building to transcend the times and survive.
